The Jezebel and Ahab Spirits Behind Narcissism

You have been told you have a "Jezebel spirit."

Maybe it happened because you dared to question a leader, or you set a biblical boundary, or you simply spoke the truth about something that was wrong in your church, your ministry, or your marriage.

But what if the person pointing the finger is actually the one operating under that very spirit? What if your desire for accountability isn't rebellion at all? And what if the passive "nice guy" in the room, the one who never seems to do anything wrong, is actually the one empowering the abuse?

Today, we are going to look at the real Jezebel spirit, how it operates hand-in-hand with the Ahab spirit, and how these demonic forces perfectly mirror overt and covert narcissism.

The Smokescreen vs. The Reality

Let's start by addressing the elephant in the room: the "Jezebel" label is frequently used as a weapon.

In many toxic environments, this label is used as a DARVO tactic, Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender.

You know what this feels like. It is that moment when you bring a legitimate, biblical concern to leadership or to your spouse. You aren't yelling. You aren't gossiping. You are following Matthew 18. And instead of addressing the issue, they turn it around on you. Suddenly, you are the problem. You are accused of being rebellious, unsubmissive, or operating in a "Jezebel spirit." It is a smokescreen designed to silence the truth-teller and protect the abuser from accountability.

But here is the nuance we cannot ignore: The Jezebel spirit is real. And to understand it, we have to look at the original Jezebel in the Old Testament. Let the Scriptures define the spirit.

Jezebel was a Phoenician princess who married King Ahab of Israel. She didn't just practice her idolatry privately; she used her position of power to systematically dismantle the worship of Yahweh.

"For so it was, while Jezebel massacred the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah had taken one hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty to a cave, and had fed them with bread and water." (1 Kings 18:4)

Jezebel was a murderer of true prophets. She replaced them with 850 of her own false prophets who ate at her table. She was characterized by absolute control, manipulation, idolatry, and a ruthless drive to eliminate anyone who spoke the truth of God.

We see this spirit identified again in the New Testament.

"Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols." (Revelation 2:20)

The true Jezebel spirit is a demonic principality of control, manipulation, seduction, and the destruction of true prophetic voices. It demands absolute loyalty. It cannot handle being questioned. It twists the truth to fit its narrative.

And one of the most painful dynamics of this spirit is how it handles the people around it. A person operating in a Jezebel spirit will surround themselves with "yes men", people who validate their toxic behavior, stroke their ego, and tell them exactly what they want to hear. They will elevate these enablers to positions of power, calling them "loyal" or "spiritually mature."

But the moment someone speaks actual biblical truth, the moment someone points out a discrepancy between their actions and the Word of God, that person becomes a threat. The Jezebel spirit does not just disagree with truth-tellers; it seeks to destroy them. If you have been on the receiving end of that, stop blaming yourself. You were not the problem. You were the target.

And here is what you need to understand: the overt narcissist's desperate need for control, their demand for constant admiration, and their complete lack of empathy make them the perfect vehicle for this demonic influence. And it is not gender-specific. Men can, and absolutely do, operate in a Jezebel spirit. When a narcissistic leader uses spiritual language to dominate, manipulate, and crush the sheep they were called to shepherd, they are operating in the very spirit they accuse others of having.

The Ahab Spirit and the Covert Enabler

But Jezebel does not operate in a vacuum. She needs a platform. She needs an enabler. Enter the Ahab spirit.

We often look at King Ahab in the Old Testament as just a helpless victim of his wicked wife. But Ahab was not a victim. Ahab was a covert narcissist who used passivity to get exactly what he wanted.

Let's look at the story of Naboth's vineyard in 1 Kings 21. Ahab wanted a vineyard that belonged to a man named Naboth. Naboth rightly refused to sell it because it was his family inheritance, protected by God's law. How did Ahab react?

"So Ahab went into his house sullen and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him... And he lay down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no food." (1 Kings 21:4)

Look at this! The King of Israel is throwing a temper tantrum. He is sulking. He is playing the victim. This is the classic behavior of a covert narcissist. He wants something he cannot legitimately have, so he acts helpless.

And who steps in? Jezebel. She says, "Are you not the king? Get up and eat. I will get the vineyard for you." She then orchestrates the false accusation and murder of Naboth. And when Naboth is dead, Ahab happily goes down to take possession of the vineyard. He kept his hands clean, but he got exactly what he wanted.

"But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the Lord, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up." (1 Kings 21:25)

It is worth pausing here to ask: why did God consider Ahab more wicked than all the kings before him, when it was Jezebel who was the overt aggressor?

It is because Ahab held the God-given authority. He was the King of Israel, tasked with shepherding God's people and upholding God's law. His wickedness was not just in what he did, but in what he allowed. By abdicating his authority, he gave a demonic principality free reign over an entire nation.

Let that sink in. God holds the one who enables the abuse just as accountable as the one who commits it, because the enabler provides the cover. Ahab's passivity was not innocence; it was a calculated, cowardly strategy to get what he wanted without taking the blame. This is a spiritual abdication of authority.

Now, if you have read my blog on the Absalom spirit, you have already seen how a narcissist uses smear campaigns and flying monkeys to steal the hearts of the people around you. The Jezebel-Ahab dynamic takes that one step further, because it is not just one person running a smear campaign. It is a partnership. A system.

A Jezebel will usually be attracted to someone who has partnered with an Ahab spirit. They fit together hand in glove. The Jezebel needs someone who will not challenge their control, and the Ahab needs someone to make the hard decisions and do the dirty work so they can remain the "good guy." Ahab hands Jezebel the sword.

True Prophets vs. False Prophets

One of the primary functions of the Jezebel spirit is to endorse false prophets and kill true prophets. But how do we tell the difference today?

In the Bible, false prophets were motivated by self-interest, popularity, and financial gain. They told the people what they wanted to hear.

"Thus says the Lord of hosts: 'Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They make you worthless; They speak a vision of their own heart, Not from the mouth of the Lord.'" (Jeremiah 23:16)

False prophets promise peace when there is no peace. They validate the sin of the leaders. They are the 400 "yes men" that Ahab kept around him in 1 Kings 22, who told him to go into battle and prosper, even though God had decreed his death.

True prophets, on the other hand, are motivated by loyalty to God above all else. They speak the Word of the Lord, even when it is unpopular, even when it costs them everything. Elijah stood alone against 450 prophets of Baal. Micaiah stood alone against Ahab's 400 false prophets and told the king the hard truth.

"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits." (Matthew 7:15-16)

When Jesus says "you will know them by their fruits," He is pointing us directly to the contrast between the fruit of the Spirit and the works of the flesh. A false prophet might have incredible charisma, they might draw huge crowds, and they might even perform signs and wonders. But if their life behind closed doors is marked by outbursts of wrath, selfish ambition, and the destruction of anyone who disagrees with them, that is the fruit of the flesh. That is the mark of a false prophet.

Today, a false prophet might not be someone predicting the future. It might be a leader who twists Scripture to maintain control. It might be a pastor who preaches grace but practices abuse behind closed doors. It might be a spouse who uses the Bible to demand submission while refusing to love like Christ. You will know them by their fruits.

Discernment and True Identity

So how do we navigate this? If you have been the target of a Jezebel spirit, or if you have been falsely accused of having one, how do you move forward?

First, we have to walk in discernment. We need to be able to recognize the environment we are in. If you are in a church, a ministry, or a marriage where questions are treated as rebellion, where loyalty to the leader is elevated above loyalty to Christ, and where the "peace" is kept by silencing the truth, you are dealing with the Jezebel and Ahab dynamic.

You cannot heal in the same environment that is making you sick. Discernment means recognizing that you cannot fix a Jezebel spirit by submitting to it, and you cannot fix an Ahab spirit by doing their work for them. When you are dealing with malignant narcissism operating through these spirits, traditional conflict resolution does not work. They do not want resolution; they want domination. They will use your attempts at reconciliation as ammunition against you. In these cases, your focus has to shift entirely away from trying to change them, and toward your own safe disengagement and healing.

If you have experienced this, I want you to know: the isolation you felt was not your fault. It was engineered. You are not crazy.

I want to give you a vision of what true, God-given identity looks like. Because the enemy's goal with these spirits is to distort your understanding of authority and submission.

A person who is free from the Jezebel spirit does not need to control others to feel safe. They trust God as their defender. They can speak the truth with boldness, like Elijah, but they do not manipulate outcomes. They lead by serving, not by dominating. They invite questions because they are secure in their identity in Christ.

A person who is free from the Ahab spirit does not abdicate their responsibility. They do not hide behind passivity or play the victim. They are willing to have the hard conversations. They are willing to disrupt a false peace in order to establish true, biblical peace. They protect the vulnerable, even when it costs them their reputation or their comfort.

This is the model of Christ. Jesus spoke the truth without manipulation, and He laid down His life without abdicating His authority.
