The Python Spirit: How Narcissists Squeeze the Life Out of Your Calling

effects of abuse narcissistic relationships spiritual root of narcissism understanding narcissism Apr 01, 2026

Have you ever felt like you were born for something more, but now you can barely breathe? That the passion, the creativity, the very fire God put in your soul is slowly being extinguished?

It's not a loud explosion; it's a slow, silent suffocation. You feel stuck, constricted, and you don't know why.

This is not your fault. It is not a sign that you've lost your calling. It is a sign that something is actively squeezing the life out of it. And if this constriction goes unnamed and unchallenged, it doesn't just steal your joy.  It can steal your entire destiny. The calling God placed on your life can be suffocated into silence.

Today, we're going to name it. We are going to uncover a powerful biblical model for this experience found in Acts chapter 16: the Python Spirit. We'll explore the four specific tactics this spirit uses through narcissistic individuals to systematically suffocate your God-given purpose. And then, we are going to talk about the sobering, holistic path that is required for a person caught in this web to truly get free, a path that goes far beyond a simple prayer.

The Biblical Model: The Python in Acts 16

Let's read from Acts chapter 16, starting at verse 16:

"As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination (a spirit of Python) and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, 'These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.' And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, 'I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.' And it came out that very hour."

The spirit in this girl is called, in the original Greek, a spirit of Python. This is so important. A viper kills with venom, a quick, painful, obvious attack. But a python kills with constriction. It wraps itself around its victim so slowly, so subtly, that at first, it might even feel like an embrace.

And then it begins to squeeze. With every exhale the victim takes, the python tightens its grip, just a little bit more. Until there is no more room to breathe. And the victim dies not from a wound, but from suffocation.

Does that sound familiar? That slow, silent squeezing of your joy, your peace, your energy, your calling? That is the work of a python spirit operating through a narcissistic individual.

The 4 Tactics of Constriction

So how does this spirit operate? Let me paint a picture of what this looks like in real life. You meet someone, maybe a spouse, a pastor, a business partner, and at first, they seem like the greatest blessing God ever sent you. They celebrate your gifts. They champion your calling. But slowly, almost imperceptibly, something shifts. And you find yourself caught in these four tactics of constriction.

Tactic #1: Counterfeit Affirmation (The First Wrap)

The girl cried out, "These men are servants of the Most High God!" This sounds like a compliment. It appears supportive. But it's a counterfeit. It's flattery designed to get close.

This is the love-bombing phase. They praise your gifts, your anointing, your potential. They tell you everything you've ever wanted to hear. This is how they get close enough to wrap themselves around you. It's not genuine affirmation; it's reconnaissance. They are learning your strengths so they can later exploit them.

Tactic #2: Constant Annoyance (The Squeeze of Distraction)

She did this for "many days" until Paul was "greatly annoyed." The goal was to wear him down, distract him from his mission, and drain his spiritual and emotional energy.

Narcissists create a constant state of chaos, drama, and emergency. Your life becomes about managing their moods, putting out their fires, and dealing with their manufactured crises. You're so busy reacting to them that you have no energy left to pursue your own calling. The python is squeezing your time, your focus, and your peace.

Tactic #3: Profiting From Your Gift (The Squeeze of Exploitation)

The text tells us that the girl's spiritual gift, corrupted by the python spirit, brought her owners much gain. The gift was being used to enrich someone else's kingdom.

This is exactly what happens when a python spirit operates through a narcissistic leader, spouse, or partner in your life. Your gifts, your talents, your anointing, they don't disappear. They get redirected. They get funneled into building their ministry, their reputation, their kingdom. You pour out, and they profit. The python spirit ensures that your gift never serves the purpose God intended it for. Instead, it serves the narcissist.

Tactic #4: Suffocating Your Calling (The Final Squeeze)

The ultimate goal of constriction is suffocation. The python squeezes until the victim's heart stops, and they can no longer inhale.

This is the final stage. After months or years of this constriction, you lose your passion. Your creativity dries up. You feel disconnected from God. You can't hear His voice. You have no vision for the future. The python has squeezed so tightly that your calling, for all intents and purposes, has been suffocated.

If you're reading this right now and you feel like that fire inside you has gone out... I want you to hear me: it hasn't. It's still there. The python has just squeezed so tight that you can't feel it anymore. But we're about to change that.

Why You Can't Just "Cast It Out"

When Paul gets annoyed, turns, and commands the spirit to leave, our first instinct is to see that as a simple model for how to fix the narcissist in our lives. We think, "If I just had enough faith, I could cast that spirit out of them."

But this is a dangerous oversimplification, and we have to be incredibly careful here. Paul's action was not a magic bullet; it was the breaking of a spiritual chain. It set the girl free from the demonic entity, but it did not automatically make her a disciple of Christ. The deliverance was an invitation to freedom, but she still had to choose to walk out of the prison, repent of her old life, and fill her now-empty house with the Holy Spirit.

This reveals the sobering truth about dealing with a narcissistic individual. You cannot simply "cast out" the spirit of python and expect them to be healed. Here's why:

  • Deliverance requires consent. Paul had authority over the spirit, but for long-term freedom, the girl had to consent to a new master. A narcissist, by definition, is their own master. Their entire identity is built on resisting submission to anyone, including God. Without their genuine repentance and desire for freedom, any deliverance will be temporary at best.
  • Narcissism is a demonic infrastructure. As I explain in detail in my article on the 5-Layer Demonic Fortress, what you're facing is a spiritual stronghold that has been built brick-by-brick over decades. It starts with childhood wounds where spirits of rejection and pride lay a foundation of shame and superiority. Then, new layers are added: control and manipulation, relational warfare and exploitation, and a final layer of self-righteousness that seals the system shut. A python spirit might be at work, but it's operating within this multi-layered fortress. Casting out one spirit without dismantling the entire infrastructure is why nothing changes.
  • The danger of the empty house. Jesus gave a stark warning about the empty house. He said that when an evil spirit goes out, if it returns to find the person's life empty and unguarded, it will bring back seven other spirits more wicked than itself. Deliverance without discipleship—without the person actively choosing to tear down the fortress and rebuild a new life on the foundation of Christ—is a recipe for disaster.
  • It requires immense spiritual authority. A python spirit that has been coiling around a person's identity for decades is a high-level entity. Confronting it is not a casual affair.

The 6-Stage Path to True Freedom for the Narcissist

So what does it actually take for a narcissist to get free? It is a holistic and integrated path that goes far beyond a single prayer. It requires them to walk through these six interconnected stages, in this order:

  1. Embrace Radical Repentance. This is the non-negotiable starting point. They must recognize and renounce the fatal sins of pride, idolatry, and envy. This means they stop saying "I'm sorry you feel that way" and start saying "I was wrong. I hurt you. And I take full responsibility."
  2. Heal Their Own Trauma. Before you can effectively cast out a demon, you must begin to heal the wounds that gave it a place to live. The narcissist must have the courage to face the deep-seated trauma and insecurities that made them build the narcissistic fortress in the first place.
  3. Renounce Lies and Embrace Truth. This is the critical battle for the mind. They must dismantle the entire ungodly belief system that fueled the sin. They must get an accurate assessment of God, an accurate assessment of themselves (renouncing the lie that they are the center of the universe), and an accurate assessment of others (renouncing the lie that other people are objects to be used).
  4. Undergo True Deliverance. Now, with a foundation of repentance, healing, and a mind being renewed in truth, they can undergo effective deliverance. This is the necessary spiritual eviction of the demonic entities that have been empowered by their sin and agreement with lies.
  5. Make Restitution. True repentance always bears fruit. They must actively seek to repair the harm they have inflicted on others, without demanding or expecting forgiveness. This is about their obedience to God, not the other person's response.
  6. Submit to Lifelong Discipleship. This is the most critical step to avoid the "empty house" syndrome. They must fill their lives with the Holy Spirit and commit to emulating the actual nature of Jesus Christ: His humility, His servant-heartedness, and His sacrificial love.

This is a long, painful, and humbling road that, sadly, very few are willing to travel. And it is a journey that they must choose. You cannot choose it for them.

Your Path to Freedom

For you, the person who has been constricted, your path to freedom is not to fix them. Your path is to do what Paul did for himself: to get righteously annoyed at the attack on your calling, to turn and face the spiritual reality, and to take decisive action to cut off the source of constriction from your own life so that you can finally breathe again.

I have seen people who were completely suffocated by this spirit begin to breathe again. They rediscovered their gifts. They reconnected with God's voice. They stepped back into their calling with a fire that the enemy could not extinguish.

Your calling is not dead. It has been constricted, but it is not gone. When you remove the pressure, you will be able to breathe again. God's gifts over your life are irrevocable. The fire is still there, even if it's just embers. And today is the day you start fanning it back into flame.
