The Demon Behind Narcissism No One Talks About (Leviathan Exposed)
Apr 08, 2026
As a believer, what do you do when the Word of God itself seems to have no effect on someone?
You bring a verse about kindness, and they use it to tell you why you need to be kinder to them. You bring a verse about humility, and they agree with it in theory, but they never, ever apply it to themselves. You bring a clear, biblical boundary, and they twist it to call you legalistic or unforgiving.
It’s like you’re throwing the sharpest sword in the universe, the Word of God, and it just bounces off. It doesn’t penetrate. It doesn’t convict. It doesn’t bring change.
If you’ve ever felt that frustration, you’re not crazy. You’re not failing to share the truth in love. You are encountering a spiritual reality: a demonic armor specifically designed to repel the Word of God.
Today, we're going to go deeper than psychology and talk about the spiritual engine that forges that armor. We are going to expose the specific demonic spirit that is the engine of narcissistic pride: a powerful entity the Bible calls Leviathan. We'll look at what the Bible says about this spirit, break down its key characteristics that manifest as narcissistic behaviors, and see how it connects to the Python spirit we've discussed previously.
The Spiritual Reality of Narcissism
In this series, we’ve talked about the Python spirit. You might be wondering, "Why do we give these spirits names?" We do it because the Bible does it. When the Bible names a spirit, like the spirit of Python in Acts 16 or the spirits Jesus cast out, it’s giving us insight into that spirit’s function and its nature. Naming the spirit is the first step to understanding its strategy so you can overcome it.
Make no mistake, narcissism is not just a personality disorder; it is a deeply spiritual issue. The Apostle Paul actually gave us a spiritual diagnosis for it nearly 2,000 years ago. In 2 Timothy chapter 3, he prophesied what the last days would look like. Listen to this list and see if it sounds familiar:
"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God..." (2 Timothy 3:1-5)
That very first item on the list—"lovers of themselves"—is the Greek word philautoi, and it is the Bible’s own term for what we now call narcissism. Look at the fruit that it produces: boastful, proud, unloving, unforgiving, brutal, haughty. Paul isn’t describing a personality type; he’s describing a spiritual condition.
The Original Narcissist
This isn’t just a human problem. It’s a demonic one. This spirit of pride has an origin, and we see it in the fall of the very first narcissist: Satan himself. In the book of Isaiah, chapter 14, the prophet gives us a glimpse into the heart of Satan at the moment of his rebellion. It is a cascade of five arrogant "I will" statements:
"For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation...; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’" (Isaiah 14:13-14)
That is the ultimate expression of narcissistic pride. It is the creature attempting to usurp the throne of the Creator. It is the original sin. And Satan is now waging a war on the earth to conform humanity into his own image of pride and self-worship, and to steal the worship that belongs to God alone.
You might be wondering, how does a regular person end up under the influence of a principality this powerful? It doesn't happen overnight. If you've read my article on the Demonic Infrastructure of Narcissism, you know how a fortress gets built layer by layer over decades, from childhood wounds, to control, to exploitation, to spiritual blindness. Each layer is built on unrepented pride.
Leviathan is the king who sits on the throne of that completed fortress. He doesn't show up at Layer 1. He shows up when decades of unrepented pride have built him a throne to sit on.
(If you want to see that fortress laid out visually—every layer, every spirit, and how they work together—I have a free resource for you called The 5-Layer Fortress: A Visual Guide to Understanding Narcissistic Strongholds. It's an essential companion to what we're covering today.)
Leviathan: The King of Pride
So what is Leviathan? The primary text is in the book of Job, chapter 41. For an entire chapter, God Himself describes this fearsome, untamable sea monster. This is not just a biology lesson. God is revealing a spiritual reality. He is showing us a picture of a powerful, monstrous spiritual force that is completely beyond human control.
After describing its impenetrable scales and terrifying nature, God gives us the key that unlocks the entire mystery. In Job 41, verse 34, God says:
"He beholds every high thing; He is king over all the children of pride.”
Let that sink in. Leviathan is not just a spirit of pride. It is the king over all the children of pride. It is the ruling authority, the principality, that empowers and directs the arrogant, self-serving, reality-twisting pride that is the hallmark of the narcissist.
Let’s look at the three biblical traits of Leviathan that you will absolutely recognize in the narcissist in your life, with the Scripture to back it up.
1. The Twisted & Fleeing Serpent
Isaiah 27, verse 1 says:
"In that day the LORD with His severe sword, great and strong, Shall punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan that twisted serpent..."
This verse reveals two of the narcissist's primary manipulation tactics.
First, the twist. You know that feeling of mental whiplash? You walk into a room to talk about the bills, and twenty minutes later you’re somehow apologizing for your tone of voice and defending something you did three years ago. That’s the twist. It’s the gaslighting, the word salads, the DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) that actively manipulates reality to make you feel like you’re going crazy. If you feel like you’re losing your mind in conversations, you’re not. You are encountering the twist of Leviathan.
Second, the flee. This is the stonewalling, the silent treatment, the disappearing acts. You try to address a legitimate hurt, and they simply refuse to engage. They walk out of the room, or give you the silent treatment for days, leaving you alone with all the anxiety and confusion. That feeling of being utterly abandoned and dismissed when you try to connect? That is the flight of Leviathan.
2. The Impenetrable Armor
This is the spiritual armor we talked about earlier. God describes it in Job 41, verses 15 through 17:
"His rows of scales are his pride, Shut up tightly as with a seal; One is so near another That no air can come between them; They are joined one to another, They stick together and cannot be parted.”
This is a perfect picture of the narcissist’s inability to receive correction. It’s like talking to a brick wall, but a brick wall that blames you for being a wall. You bring up a legitimate hurt, with evidence, and you’re met with a list of your own flaws. Your pain, your logic, even Scripture itself just bounces off.
That feeling of utter futility, of your words just vanishing into thin air, is real. You are not failing to communicate clearly. You are facing a spiritual armor that is sealed tight against conviction.
3. The Hard Heart & Untamable Will
First, the hard heart. Job 41, verse 24 says:
"His heart is as hard as stone, Even as hard as the lower millstone.”
This is the clinical lack of empathy. It’s that moment when you are weeping, your heart is broken, and you look into their eyes for just a flicker of compassion… and you see nothing. Just a cold, analytical stare, as if they're studying a bug under a microscope. That chilling emptiness, that inability to be moved by your pain, is the hard heart of Leviathan.
Second, the untamable will. God asks Job rhetorically in verse 4:
"Will he make a covenant with you? Will you take him as a servant forever?”
The answer is no. This is why a narcissist cannot be trusted. They will not enter into a true covenant of mutual respect. Their will is untamable. They will not serve; they demand to be served.
How Leviathan and Python Work Together
In our previous article, we talked about the Python spirit, which constricts your calling. How does that connect to Leviathan?
Leviathan is the PRIDE that makes you a target, and Python is the CONSTRICTION that suffocates you.
Leviathan whispers to the narcissist, "You are a god. You deserve to be served." This pride then gives the Python spirit the legal right to operate through them to constrict and control you. Think of it like this: Leviathan is the General of Pride, and Python is the Assassin of Constriction. They work together within the demonic infrastructure we’ve talked about before.
The Only Solution
If you’re facing this monstrous, armored, hard-hearted spirit of pride, what do you do? The book of Job gives us a very sobering answer: You cannot defeat Leviathan.
God makes this painfully clear. He says in Job 41, verses 8 and 9:
"Lay your hand on him; Remember the battle— Never do it again! Indeed, any hope of overcoming him is false; Shall one not be overwhelmed at the sight of him?”
Your attempts to reason, to argue, to prove your point. They are like paper darts against a tank. God Himself says that even the hope of overcoming him is false.
So what is the solution? The only one who can defeat Leviathan is God Himself. Isaiah 27:1 says on that day, the Lord will punish Leviathan with His "fierce and great and strong sword." It is God’s sword, not yours, that wins this battle.
So what is your weapon? James chapter 4, verse 6 tells us: "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
Your weapon is not to fight pride with more pride. Your weapon is humility. When you humble yourself before God, you step out of the ring and you invite the Dragon-Slayer to fight on your behalf. This is not weakness. This is the most powerful strategic move you can make.
This means your strategy has three practical, liberating steps:
- Stop Fighting: This is your moment of liberation. Recognize this is not your battle to win. Stop engaging with the arguments. Stop trying to prove your point. Every time you step into the ring with the king of pride, you are fighting on his turf, by his rules. When you stop, you take your power back.
- Humble Yourself: This is your moment of clarity. Look at your own heart and repent for any pride that has crept in. Repent for trying to be their savior. Repent for trying to change them. Repent for engaging in the fight in your own strength. Humility isn’t about thinking less of yourself; it’s about thinking of yourself less, and thinking of God more.
- Appeal to the Judge: This is your moment of surrender. Hand the entire case over to God. He is the righteous judge. Present your pain, your evidence, and your exhaustion to Him in prayer, and then leave the outcome in His hands. You are not abandoning the fight; you are handing it to the only One who can actually win it.
Your freedom from the pride of narcissism doesn’t come from fighting harder; it comes from humbling yourself and letting God be your defender.
