5 Signs God Is Exposing a Narcissist: What to Do
Sep 04, 2026
You have asked God to expose what is happening, bring the truth to the surface, and do something about the deception you can see. Yet the person is still in position. Still respected. Still believed.
And you may be wondering whether God sees what you see at all.
But what if God is already moving, and it does not look like the public downfall you expected? What if exposure begins with something God is doing in you first?
Scripture shows a progression. God awakens you. He makes the fruit impossible to ignore. He brings truth from outside the system. He calls you to walk in light. Then the response to light reveals what was hidden.
This post will walk you through five biblical signs that God may already be bringing a deceptive pattern into the light, along with your role at each stage.
1. God Awakens You to What He Has Already Seen
The first sign is that God opens your eyes to something He has been watching for a long time.
Genesis 31 gives us a clear picture. Jacob worked for his father-in-law, Laban, for years. Laban deceived Jacob at the beginning of their arrangement, changed the terms repeatedly, and changed Jacob’s wages ten times. Every time Jacob found a way to succeed, Laban moved the goalpost.
This was a family relationship with a serious power imbalance. Jacob remained bound to an arrangement that kept changing around him.
Then God spoke to Jacob and named what had been happening.
“I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.” Genesis 31:12
Jacob had lived inside that system for twenty years. He had worked in it, endured it, and accepted the changing terms. Then God pulled back the curtain and showed him the full pattern. After that, God told him to leave.
That is often how awakening begins. God interrupts your acceptance of a situation and draws your attention to what He has already seen.
“For God may speak in one way, or in another, yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night… in order to turn man from his deed and conceal pride from man, He keeps back his soul from the Pit.” Job 33:14–18
God’s awakening is not paranoia
It is important to make this distinction. God does not create paranoia. He interrupts denial.
Paranoia is scattered and anxious. It has no clear object. It makes you suspicious of everyone and everything.
God’s awakening is different. It draws your attention to something specific. It invites sober examination. It does not make you afraid of everyone. It makes you unable to keep ignoring one thing.
This may look like:
- A dream that will not leave you.
- A passage of Scripture that keeps surfacing.
- A deep check in your spirit that you can no longer explain away.
- A conversation you did not expect that suddenly makes the pattern clear.
“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good.” 1 Thessalonians 5:19–21
Do not dismiss what God may be showing you. But do not treat one impression as the whole case either. Let it move you toward prayer, careful observation, and honest attention to the fruit.
2. God Makes the Fruit Impossible to Reconcile With the Image
Jesus gave a direct principle for discernment:
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:15–16
You will know them by their fruits, not by their words, reputation, position, or spiritual appearance.
First Samuel 15 shows what this looks like. King Saul was given a specific command from God. Instead of obeying fully, he spared what he was told to destroy and kept the best livestock. Then he told Samuel, “I have performed the commandment of the Lord.”
Samuel’s answer exposed the contradiction:
“What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears?” 1 Samuel 15:14
Saul’s image said one thing. His fruit said another. The evidence of disobedience was audible in the background.
When the fruit becomes too loud to ignore
A second sign that God may be bringing something into the light is that the gap between the person’s image and their fruit becomes impossible to hold together.
They may claim to be loving, humble, godly, safe, or accountable. But what do they consistently produce? Confusion? Fear? Secrecy? Broken trust? Isolation? Retaliation when questioned?
You may find yourself working harder and harder to reconcile what they say with what you are experiencing. The strain of trying to hold both realities becomes unbearable.
That is not necessarily confusion. It may be God making the fruit audible.
Pay attention when the evidence repeatedly contradicts the image. Scripture tells you to examine the fruit.
3. God Breaks the Closed System
The third sign is that truth begins to reach you from outside the system you have been living in.
A closed system can be a family, church, ministry, workplace, organization, or relationship where one person or group defines reality for everyone else. They tell you what is normal, acceptable, godly, rebellious, loving, or disloyal.
Because you are inside it, their version of reality can become the only version you hear.
But after God awakens you and the fruit becomes visible, you may begin to seek answers beyond that system. You may research, read, ask new questions, speak with someone who is not controlled by the environment, or find teaching that gives you language for what you have experienced.
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7
“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13
God does not leave sincere seekers empty-handed.
Truth often comes through wise outside counsel
Sometimes you actively seek clarity. Other times, God places it in your path. A friend sends a link. A book describes your situation with startling accuracy. A counselor helps you name what has been happening. A conversation outside the system gives you a frame of reference you did not have before.
For the first time, you can compare your experience with truth that is not controlled by the person or environment that has been defining your reality.
“Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14
This is not about collecting people who automatically agree with you. It is about seeking wise, truth-loving counsel. God does not intend for you to remain dependent on one person’s or one system’s interpretation of reality.
4. God Calls You to Walk in Light
The first three signs are things God does. He awakens you. He makes the fruit visible. He brings truth from outside the system.
The fourth sign requires a response from you.
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light… And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” Ephesians 5:8–11
Light is not only information. Light calls for obedience.
The question shifts from, “What is God showing me?” to, “What faithful step is God asking me to take?”
Walking in light is not always confrontation
Walking in light does not automatically mean confronting the person face-to-face. It means you stop agreeing with the lie. You stop pretending the pattern is not happening. You come out of agreement with the darkness.
That may mean:
- Stopping the pretense in your own heart. You stop telling yourself, “Maybe I am the problem,” simply because that narrative has kept you silent. You let yourself acknowledge what you saw.
- Telling one safe person the truth. This is not gossip or an attempt to build a case. It is refusing to remain isolated in the same silence that harmed you.
- Refusing to lie for them anymore. You stop protecting someone else’s image by acting as though everything is fine when it is not.
- Taking the next faithful step God gives you. For some people, that may mean staying and speaking truth. For others, it may mean leaving. The step comes from God, not from a system’s definition of what a “good Christian” must do.
There is a difference between slander and telling the truth to someone safe. The Bible does not call honesty sin.
Walking in light may cost you something. It can cost comfort, false peace, a role in a community, or the approval of people who benefited from your silence.
But staying in darkness costs something too. It costs peace, clarity, and the ability to hear God clearly. The question is not whether you will pay a price. The question is which price you are willing to keep paying.
Safety first: If there is violence, threats, stalking, coercive control, or a credible risk of retaliation, the faithful step may not be confrontation. It may be a safety plan, outside help, documentation, and a quiet departure. Do not assume that naming the truth or setting a boundary is safe to do alone. Prioritize the safety of yourself and your children.
5. Their Response to Light Reveals What Darkness Concealed
When light enters, darkness responds.
“For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” John 3:20
The fifth sign is that when you walk in light, the person’s response reveals what their image had been hiding.
Third John gives an example. Diotrephes was a church leader who loved to have the first place. When his behavior was addressed, he did not reflect or repent. He spoke maliciously, rejected others, controlled who could be received, and expelled people from the church.
“[Diotrephes] loves to have the preeminence among them… prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.” 3 John 9–10
His response revealed his heart.
Pay attention to what happens when control is threatened
When access, secrecy, or control is threatened, a narcissistic or manipulative person may respond in ways that expose the pattern more clearly:
- Rage that is far out of proportion to what was said.
- A sudden attempt to become the victim.
- A quick effort to control the narrative before you can speak.
- Accusations that you are rebellious, divisive, bitter, disloyal, or deceived.
- Escalation instead of reflection.
You did not cause that response. The light exposed it.
Their reaction to truth is not your fault. It is their character responding to exposure, and it may reveal what the public image had concealed.
The Biblical Progression of Exposure
The progression Scripture shows is clear:
|
Stage |
What God does |
Your response |
|---|---|---|
|
1. Awakening |
God draws your attention to a specific pattern He has seen. |
Pay attention without rushing into fear or conclusions. |
|
2. Fruit made visible |
God makes the gap between image and fruit too clear to ignore. |
Examine consistent outcomes, not claims or reputation. |
|
3. The closed system breaks |
God brings wise truth and outside perspective. |
Seek counsel that is safe, wise, and committed to truth. |
|
4. Walking in light |
God calls you to respond faithfully to what He has shown you. |
Stop agreeing with the lie; take the next safe, obedient step. |
|
5. The response reveals the heart |
Light exposes what darkness concealed. |
Do not take responsibility for another person’s reaction to truth. |
Your Assignment Is Not to Manufacture Their Downfall
God sees what is happening.
He said to Jacob:
“I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.” Genesis 31:12
He sees what is being done to you too.
Your assignment is not to manufacture a public collapse, force everyone to understand, or make the person confess. Your assignment is to obey the light you have received. Walk as a child of light. Stop participating in darkness through silence, secrecy, or coerced agreement with a lie.
The first victory is not necessarily their public downfall. The first victory is your freedom from confusion, secrecy, and forced participation in what is not true.
If God is awakening you, making the fruit visible, or calling you to a faithful next step, do not ignore it. Pray. Seek wise counsel. Take the next safe step He gives you.
And remember: the God who saw what Laban was doing to Jacob is able to see, speak, lead, and bring you into freedom too.
